How to evolve Burmy in Pokémon Legends: Arceus

The Bug-type has four possible evolution routes

Pokémon Legends: Arceus’ ancient Hisui region features a number of creatures that were originally introduced in the Sinnoh region, including Burmy. Evolving the small Bug-type is surprisingly complex, as it has four different evolution routes based on two different factors.

Here’s all the information players need in order to make sure they get the right Burmy evolution in Pokémon Legends: Arceus.

Where to find Burmy

Burmy has three different forms that could potentially impact which Pokémon it evolves into. The Burmy’s form depends on where the player finds and catches it in Pokémon Legends: Arceus.

In Obsidian Fieldlands, Burmy will have the green Plant Cloak. In Crimson Mirelands, it will have the yellowish-brown Sandy Cloak. Finally, it will have the pink Trash Cloak in Cobalt Coastlands. While Burmy remains a pure Bug-type, regardless of its form, some of its evolutions have a different type depending on Burmy’s Cloak.

Players will exclusively find Burmy hiding in shaking trees. If the trainer throws out one of their Pokémon and has it attack the shaking tree, a Burmy can pop out and engage the trainer in battle. From here, the trainer can throw a Poké Ball in order to catch the Burmy.

Evolving Burmy in Pokémon Legends: Arceus

The first factor that impacts Burmy’s evolution in Pokémon Legends: Arceus is gender. Regardless of form, all male Burmy will evolve into the Bug/Flying-type Mothim. Conversely, all female Burmy will evolve into Wormadam.

Unlike Mothim, Wormadam retains its Cloak after evolving from Burmy. But, unlike Burmy, Wormadam’s type is influenced by its Cloak. Plant Cloak Wormadam is a Bug/Grass-type, Sandy Cloak Wormadam is a Bug/Ground-type and Trash Cloak Wormadam is a Bug/Steel-type.

No matter what form or Pokémon it evolves into, Burmy will always be ready to evolve at Level 20. However, getting it there can be a bit of a challenge, since Burmy doesn’t learn any moves other than the fairly weak Struggle Bug until after it evolves in Pokémon Legends: Arceus. Regardless, trainers should pay attention to where they catch their Burmy and what gender it is, in order to determine what Pokémon it will eventually evolve into.
