David Vonderhaar confirms Call of Duty 2020 won’t feature jetpacks

Call of Duty 2020, rumored to be another Black Ops title, won’t feature any kind of jetpack according to David Vonderhaar. As the lead multiplayer designer at Treyarch, Vonderhaar has overseen every Black Ops title. However, he’s stated that the series’ third installment, Black Ops 3, traumatized him the most due to fan backlash over jetpacks. This led him to halt any forward-thinking concerning the mechanic.

While some fans have said they would welcome a return, Vonderhaar seems adamant. Call of Duty 2020 will certainly be an interesting mystery to follow for the next few months, as development has been reportedly rushed.

No more jetpacks in Call of Duty

For three straight years, futuristic jetpacks dominated Call of Duty. From 2014-2017, each new series installment featured a thrust jump movement system. While some fans loved the system, many were fed up with it by 2016’s title, Infinite Warfare.

However, according to David Vonderhaar, he was getting hate on social media during Black Ops 3 life’s cycle. Though the hate stemmed from a number of aspects, apparently jetpacks were at the center of it all. This backlash from fans led Vonderhaar to reject requests for their return in a recent Twitter rant.

At the time, the jetpacks were a controversial topic in the community. 2014’s Advanced Warfare completely changed everything, and fans weren’t thrilled to see that movement system return for 2015’s Black Ops 3. So, naturally, fans threw a tantrum directed at the face of Treyarch, David Vonderhaar.

Although some fans would no doubt like to see jetpacks return, most would agree that a good Call of Duty is more important. Jetpacks or no jetpacks, we haven’t seen a highly-approved game since Black Ops 3, ironically. With Modern Warfare‘s many issues, fans would welcome any game that brings the series back to its roots.

Hopefully, Treyarch can once again be Call of Duty‘s saviors. However, with their development rushed, all we can hope for is a complete game at launch.
