DarkGenex and Sora voted into Smash Summit 13

A pair of Fox mains come out on top in the first voting period

The first round of voting for Beyond the Summit’s next Super Smash Bros. Melee invitational came to a close on Monday. Justin “DarkGenex” Cohen and Josh “Sora” Lyras will join a line-up of automatic invitees and qualifying players from Genesis 8 at Smash Summit 13 in May.

DarkGenex produced a wide array of skits and other content leading up to the end of the first voting period for Smash Summit 13, drawing on support from the Eternal Return community as well as the Melee community. As a result, he held a comfortable lead for the majority of the voting period.

Meanwhile, Sora pulled off a historic campaign for Smash Summit 13 to attend his second Summit event in a row. He became the first vote-in for two consecutive Smash Summits since Masaya “aMSa” Chikamoto at Smash Summits 5 and 6. In addition, Sora became the only person to get voted in during the first voting period for two Summits in a row since the multi-period voting system began with Smash Summit 3.

More about DarkGenex and Sora going into Smash Summit 13

Like previous Summit vote-in Nick “yingling” Yingling, DarkGenex is not primarily known as a top player. Rather, he is best-known as a content creator and active community member. He is one of the head tournament organizers for New York’s The Nightclub local, the creator of the “SpongeBob SquarePants”-inspired “This Week in Melee RECAPPED” series and Sasha “Magi” Sullivan’s video editor.

DarkGenex has also found moderate success as a competitor. He previously earned the No. 6 position on New Jersey’s online tournament power rankings. In addition, he placed 13th at Super Smash Con: Fall Fest in October of 2021. There, DarkGenex flourished in a bracket full of Ice Climbers main. He defeated Sam “Frostbyte” Cashin and Kyle “dizzkidboogie” Athayde while narrowly losing to Hugh “SluG” Hegarty.

Sora’s previous Summit trip helped put him on the map as he defeated the likes of Avery “Ginger” Wilson and Gio “null” Rossi even after battling with food poisoning. Sora is currently a top 30 player in North America. However, he recently suffered a mediocre 65th-place finish at Genesis 8. As a result, Summit will present Sora with another opportunity to match his impressive results from the end of last year.

Two more players will join DarkGenex and Sora at Smash Summit 13 when the next voting period ends. This voting period will end at 3 p.m. ET on Wednesday.
