During week 10 of the third season of Street Fighter League, before the second team match began, a trailer was shown that revealed the date and location of the Capcom Cup 2021 finals next year. The event will host two tournaments, the first being the SFL World Championship Finals with the two qualifying teams from the US and Japan facing off for the $150,000 prize pool. Then, of course, will be the Capcom Cup finals with the 18 players who made it in by winning their regional online events. Last year’s champion iDom will also attend the Capcom Cup along with Luffy, who won the community vote in poll that ended on December 18.
The event will take place from February 19-21 at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic, which is the home country of former Capcom Cup champion and current Street Fighter League contestant MenaRD. Mena has been building the FGC in his country for years now with a lot of success, and it is so great to see that growth validated by having the Capcom Cup take place there.
The announcements sadly ended with some not so exciting news, though. It was revealed by one of the producers for Street Fighter V, Shuhei Matsumoto, that the first character for season five, Dan Hibiki, would be delayed until February. The delay is due to the COVID-19 pandemic slowing down development. Therefore, he probably will release right after Capcom Cup ends, most likely with a trailer hinting at the next character for season five, which is slated to be Rose in the Spring of next year.
Who is the mysterious fifth character?
We still do not know who the last character for season five will be. Due to so many costumes from Fighting EX Layer added to the game, many thought it would be one of that game’s most popular characters, Skullomania. However, G recently got a Skullomania costume that can be earned by players. Since characters that appear as costumes have never been made full characters before, that theory has been essentially proven false. We also don’t know what the new mechanic that will be introduced alongside Dan will be. Needless to say there is a lot of exciting news and matches to look forward to next year for Street Fighter V as we move closer to the Capcom Cup 2021 finals.
