Can you play Spider-Man 2 on PS4?

Last-gen players are worried

The month of October is stacked with high-profile video game releases, but perhaps none are more exciting than Spider-Man 2. The sequel to Marvel’s Spider-Man in 2018 and Miles Morales in 2020, the third title in the series is set to revolutionize the open-world genre.

However, not every fan of the franchise will get to play at launch, and PS4 fans especially are wondering if they’ll get to experience Spider-Man 2 or not.

Both the original Spider-Man and Miles Morales were both released at launch for the PlayStation 4. Of course, the PS5 was not out yet when the original Spider-Man launched, so the PS4 was the only console of choice given Sony’s exclusivity rights with the Spider-Man franchise. In today’s age, though, the PS5 is the new standard when it comes to console releases, and the PS4 is starting to become obsolete in the eyes of developers.

So, will Spider-Man 2 give the PS4 one last ride or is PS5 the only way to play?

Playing Spider-Man 2 on PS4

Unfortunately, Spider-Man 2 has confirmed to not be arriving on PS4 both at launch and anytime during the future.

There are several reasons for this decision, but the primary one is the PS4 simply doesn’t have the technology to keep up with the massive graphical and mechanical advancements that are present in the new Spider-Man title. The PS4 really started to show its age in Miles Morales, and that was released three years ago.

As such, if the developers were to try and develop a PS4 port for Spider-Man 2, they would have to cut massive corners and it’s unlikely the gun would even run on the console’s older hardware. For example, the new seamless fast travel system in Spider-Man 2 just isn’t feasible without an SSD, meaning PS4 users would need one in their console instead of a hard drive. And even with an SSD installed, it isn’t going to make the PS4 powerful enough to handle the other new technological advancements.

So, if you want to play Spider-Man 2 now or in the future, you need a PS5.
