Breaking down the Mortal Kombat 11 story trailer

This article is over 6 years old and may contain outdated information

Last week we got an extended look at the story mode of the much-anticipated Mortal Kombat 11. There is a lot of info to cover before the Kotal Kahn Kombat Kast next week, so let’s break it down.

The story so far

First, we see Mortal Kombat 11‘s antagonist Kronika, the ruler of time itself, bring the past and present together to stop the new Dark Raiden from meddling with the timeline any further.

Despite this seemingly noble objective, it is clear that Kronika has something far more sinister up her sleeves (or robes). She recruits Shao Kahn, Kano, and a myriad of other Mortal Kombat baddies to take out Raiden as well as Earthrealm’s forces. This is where we get to see past versions of characters meet with their current selves like Scorpion vs. Scorpion, Johnny Cage getting tired of his own crap, and the Liu Kang and Kung Lao we all know and love together again. There are several instances of these two together, which may hint a possible Shaolin Monks-style mode. We really hope so! Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks was an excellent action-adventure title that deserved its own sequel, something fans have clamored for over the years.

Familiar faces

We also get to see newcomers from Mortal Kombat X like Kotal Kahn, Cassie Cage, Erron Black, and Jacqui Briggs make a return. Long-time villain Shao Kahn is featured prominently in the story mode, which is significant. In previous NetherRealm Studios games, the pre-order bonus characters (Goro in MKX; Darkseid in Injustice 2) have not factored into the story mode of their respective games. That does not seem to be the case for Mortal Kombat 11.

Also, unlike the MK11 announcement trailer, rap music can work for Mortal Kombat if the right song is used; this one fits the tone of the game and trailer far better than 21 Savage’s track.

We also have a new Kombat Kast scheduled next week, with Kotal Kahn as the next character to be detailed judging from this NetherRealm tweet showing Kotal Kahn’s shin guards and sword.
