Baldur’s Gate 3: How to unlock the Ancient Tome in BG3

One of the many mysteries in Baldur’s Gate 3 is an Ancient Tome called Necromancy of Thay, found within a hidden lair in the Blighted Village. If you find yourself exploring the cellar and looking for secrets, here’s how to find and claim the dark tome and use its forbidden knowledge.

How to find the Ancient Tome

To find the Ancient Tome you will first need to find the secret passage. This can be found on your own or by getting some hints from the Search the Cellar quest. Once you get into the secret passage, you’ll need to complete some puzzles — typical for Baldur’s Gate 3, of course.

How to unlock the Ancient Tome

Once you’ve located the Ancient Tome, you will see that it’s locked.

To unlock it, you’ll have to do a few things. Again, typical to Baldur’s Gate 3. You’ll notice that the book has a slot on the front sealing it rather than a keyhole. Head to the Dark Amethyst in the Blighted Village, hidden below the town in a well. Climb down the rope to get to the right area.

Once you’re in the right area, you’ll need to fight off some spiders. Avoid touching their webs and find the Queen Matriarch. Kill the eggs before she hatches them. Once she’s defeated, grab the gem and then go back to the book. You can use it to open the book and look inside.

When you do, you’ll learn the Speak With Dead spell. Use this to talk to the corpses and use them to get more information. You’ll also get the Forbidden Knowledge trait, giving you a +1 bonus to Wisdom Saves.

If you are opposed to dark magic, you can destroy the book as well. You can damage it with Radiant damage — not much else will work. Drop the book on the ground, attack it with Radiant damage (like Sacred Flame), and fight off the three Evil Shadows it summons. Use spells for this fight as well. You won’t get a reward but you will have stopped the dark magic, if that is what you so desire.
