The LMG category in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War holds the fewest number of primary weapons in Season 3. While this makes choosing a gun easier, it doesn’t make discerning the best in class any simpler. There are two contenders for the top spot: the RPD and Stoner 63.

For several months, without question, the honor went to the Stoner 63. It had virtually no recoil, blistering damage and assault rifle-like range. However, Treyarch decided to nerf it in Season 3 and this ushered in a new era for the LMG class. Now, it’s clear that the RPD is the best LMG in Black Ops Cold War.

Essentially, Treyarch swapped the Stoner 63 and RPD’s stats in Season 3. The developers nerfed the Stoner’s max damage, range and recoil while buffing the RPD’s max damage. While some players might still stand by the Stoner 63, the RPD is unquestionably the best LMG in multiplayer.

The RPD features decent mobility for a light machine gun, top-tier damage and almost no recoil. This makes it a laser beam at any range. With the right attachments, the gun can be treated as an assault rifle with decently slower aim down sights time.

Of course, the point of an LMG isn’t to run and gun with it. Like other weapons in its class, the RPD is best served at medium-range, holding a sightline. Posting up in different spots on the map will yield great results with any LMG, but even more so with the RPD. Using a 2-3x zoomed scope with damage-boosting attachments is the best route to take. If players attempt to sprint around the map, they’ll quickly find out how limited the weapon is in terms of mobility.

The Stoner 63 had a great run in Black Ops Cold War but, in Season 3, it’s the RPD that reigns supreme in the LMG category.
