Wizards of the Coast recently released the official trailer for the latest Magic: The Gathering expansion, War of the Spark. It was an amazing work of art with a beautiful cinematic, a heart-wrenching story and a chilling end. So, what was the best part? With so much to love, you probably can’t go wrong with this question. Our vote goes to the brilliant cover of Linkin Park’s ‘In the End’ that played in the background through all of it.

In the end, it doesn’t even matter
There is no verbal dialogue and not a single word is uttered throughout the entire War of the Spark trailer. But the background music speaks volumes. The rendition, produced by Tommee Profitt and performed by Jung Youth and Fleurie, adds an eerie atmosphere to an already harrowing clip.
The chorus, which was originally performed by the late, great Chester Bennington, reads:
I tried so hard
And got so far
But in the end
It doesn’t even matterI had to fall
To lose it all
But in the end
It doesn’t even matter
And this perfectly lines up with the tragic theme of one character who was prominently featured throughout the trailer and over the last 8 years of Magic: The Gathering.
War of the Spark trailer: The end of Liliana?
If you haven’t had a chance to watch it yet, check out our full breakdown of the War of the Spark trailer here. The story walks through the painful dilemma of Liliana, who after battling her personal demons for so long, is now a slave of Nicol Bolas, the Dragon God. Reflecting on the damage she’s done with the Dreadhorde army on Bolas’ behalf, she realizes a change of heart. She turns towards Bolas and directs his own army to attack him.
This is where the tragedy of Liliana and the power of In the End’s lyrics intertwine. Despite how hard she tried and the lifelong battle that led her here, in the end, none of it really mattered. It took only one look from Bolas to incinerate the legendary necromancer. The trailer ends with Liliana’s horrifying shrieks as her entire being catches fire.
