Valve hammers away at Cache and kills OCD reloading in latest CS2 updates

Over the past few weeks Valve has dropped a series of heavy patches changing everything from gun feel and recoil to how your magazine economy works. At the same time Cache is getting a massive and continuous overhaul in the map pool.

Last week, on May 14, Valve pushed out yet another update in what has been an unusually active spring for Counter-Strike 2. The focus remains heavily on Cache. The developers fixed various holes in the map and added grating to some windows to make them block bullets. They also tweaked how players and grenades clip the environment.

This is just the latest in a long string of tweaks to get Cache tournament ready. The map was officially added to Competitive, Casual, Deathmatch, and Retakes in late April. Since then Valve has among other things increased the bomb explosion radius and adjusted the lighting around Vent.

Mechanical changes and the CS:GO feel

It is not just maps getting polished. The massive Animgraph 2 system has rolled out to reduce CPU and networking costs tied to animations. All third-person animations were re-authored, and in-air crouching transitions are now smoother in both first and third-person.

For the purists, the most important mechanical shift hit on April 21. Valve adjusted the camera motion during recoil to match CS:GO much closer. You also get the full camera motion from external sources of aim punch, like getting shot, regardless of network latency. The result is a gun feel that punishes you harder and reacts faster.

The end of compulsive reloading

We also need to talk about the March change that is still ruining the economy for players in matchmaking. Valve refactored reloading to force players into careful consideration of their ammo. When you reload a magazine-fed weapon now, all leftover ammo in the old magazine is thrown away. That means the habit of reloading after firing two bullets will cost you dearly. Reserve ammunition is now displayed as the number of magazines, shells, or bullets depending on the gun.

Over on Dust II, the developers allowed themselves to be a bit cheeky. In a recent update they uncovered a previously hidden jump spot by Mid Box. They added dryly in the patch notes that it was done “On purpose this time”.
