Álvaro “Trif” García Moral won Melee Singles at Omega III in Deer Park, New York on June 9. Trif will remain in the United States to compete at Smash Summit 8 in Los Angeles this weekend.

Trif was the clear favorite to win the event, with wins over Jason “Mew2King” Zimmerman and Masaya “aMSa” Chikamoto this year. Despite this, Trif got off to a rocky start at Omega III Melee Singles. He narrowly won a five-game set against Jake “Jmook” Arvonio. Then, Trif lost to Nicholas “NMW” Whittier in Winners Quarters. Trif qualified for top 8 on losers side with a 3-0 victory over Dawud “Aklo” Rahman.

In top 8, Trif’s victories became more convincing. He advanced to top 4 with 3-0 wins over Rosario “Darktooth” Fuschetto and Overtriforce. Then, he won 3-1 sets against Professor Pro and Anthony “Slox” Detres. Finally, Trif reset the bracket against Aziz “Hax” Al-Yami and won the second set of Grand Finals. Trif won the first set against Hax 3-1 and the second set 3-2.

The rest of Europe at Omega III Melee

Overtriforce and Professor Pro both ran into Trif on his losers run. As a result, they placed lower than they might have had Trif beaten NMW earlier in the bracket. Even so, both players had decent performances landing them in the top 6 of the bracket.

Overtriforce had a fairly easy run to top 8, beating Taylor “DrLobster” Baldwin and Danyal “Foxy Grandpa” Rahman. Foxy Grandpa had notably upset Darktooth the previous round. Overtriforce took Hax to game five in their Winners Semis set. However, he still lost to Hax and then to Trif for 5th place.

Like Trif, Professor Pro dropped into the losers bracket early. He lost to Nico “Ryobeat” Rodriguez in the first round of top 32 on winners side. From there, Professor Pro put together a solid losers run, eliminating players like Foxy Grandpa, Jake “42nd” Cohen, and NMW. These wins enabled him to place 4th in Omega III Melee Singles.
