Trif wins Smash Melee Singles at Battle of the Armada

Álvaro “Trif” García Moral won Super Smash Bros. Melee Singles at Battle of the Armada on June 21. Though he has entered multiple online tournaments since the pandemic started, he has exclusively used his Fox and Falco secondaries. As a result, this was his first netplay event with his main character, Peach.

Trif’s run began with predictable 2-0 victories over Basil “Xilio” Youssef and Håvard “NinjagoFan72” Vaa Dalen. Afterward, he beat Niklas “Kins0” Vogt 3-1. In doing so, he advanced into top 16 on winners side.

Trif beat Georg “Rikzz” T. 3-0 in Winners Quarters and Aaron “Professor Pro” Thomas 3-1 in Winners Semis. Then he was floated into Grand Finals, as Christopher “MINT” Montgomery dropped out due to a power outage. Trif faced off against Rikzz again in Melee Grand Finals at Battle of the Armada. While Rikzz did better the second time around, Trif still won the set 3-2.

Super Smash Bros. Melee legend Adam “Armada” Lindgren hosted and livestreamed Battle of the Armada. Previously, Armada hosted a similar online Super Smash Bros. Ultimate event. Andrés “AndresFn” Fariñas won that event over Marcel “quiK” Romagnuolo.

Rikzz had a fantastic and unexpected run to 2nd place in Melee Singles at Battle of the Armada. He overcame Christopher “Humpe” Falck 2-0 and Jaap “Jeapie” van der Zee 3-1 before losing 0-3 to Trif. Then Rikzz went on an insane losers run to make it all the way to Grand Finals. He beat Elliot “Frenzy” Grossman 3-2, “RedBlaze” 3-0, Ville “Levingy” Miekk-oja 3-1, and Professor Pro 3-2. Of course, Rikzz then got a free pass into Grand Finals after MINT dropped out.

Despite an unfortunate power outage, MINT still had an impressive run into Winners Finals. In pools, MINT beat Patrick “Kingu” K. 2-1 and Frenzy 3-1. He then swept through the rest of his winners bracket, with 3-0 wins against “Solobattle” and Levingy. MINT previously established himself as an online threat by winning Nico “Ryobeat” Rodriguez’ Minneapolis Charity Netplay Event: Europe Edition.

Though he suffered an early loss to Rikzz, Humpe made an impressive losers run to place 5th at Battle of the Armada’s Smash Melee event. He beat Enrique “K-12” López Lerma 2-0 and Amsah Augustuszoon 3-0 to make it into top 12. From there, Humpe eliminated Solobattle and Niklas “Poppmaister6000” Hallgren.
