So you’d better work out your gaming budget now – you surely won’t be able to play them all.

Best new games in September 2024

This list is in order of release date, not quality or hype, so keep that in mind and let’s get scrolling.

Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions – 3 September

Platforms: PS5, XSX, PC

Okay, I’m not so sure how I feel about this one. Are you ready for some opinion? Because you’re getting it anyway. Look, I’m a huge Potter-head, I read all the books and watched all the movies in my youth, but even back then, I thought Quidditch was kind of a stupid sport.

What’s the point of the other six players on the pitch if the seeker can just insta-win games anyway? The only exception to this I ever saw was when Ireland beat Bulgaria despite Krum catching the Snitch, and that’s only because Ireland were so totally dominant.

Still, I remain hopeful that we’ll get a fun game here, and more reasons to immerse ourselves in this awesome universe. I’m eager to see how it’s all handled, and that we actually have a viable game here.

My first thought was that this was just a cash-grab, but get this: There are no micro-transactions in this game at the time of launch. I’ll be the first to say that that’s pretty cool! There’s a career mode, a co-op mode, and full-on multiplayer.

I’m really curious to see how this plays out!

Astro Bot – 6 September

Platforms: PS5

Astro returns to this PlayStation exclusive that’s said to be many times larger than the old Astro’s Playroom. If you like the older games, you’ll probably love this 3D platformer that promises to infringe on 150 of it’s own PlayStation IP’s.

We’ll get to see characters such as Kratos, Nathan Drake, Ratchet, and 147 more familiar faces. We’re pretty sure there will be a trophy for finding them all (I kind of wish there 151, to be honest!).

If you got that last reference, that’s great! You’re probably getting on in years, too!

Overall, if you’re a fan of 3D platformers, definitely keep a look out for this one.

Warhammer 40 000: Space Marine 2 – 9 September

Platforms: PC, PS5, XSX

Dear Warhammer fan, you don’t need me to tell you that the hype surrounding new Warhammer releases is always off the charts! Space Marines return for a second time in the latest DLC, sure to revive the player base and delight fans the world over.

I’ve never played a Warhammer game myself, but judging from the excited giggles of my friend every time I mention this game, it’s a big deal. Get excited, it’s hitting us on the 9th of September. Better plan your leave accordingly!

Towerborne – 10 September

Platforms: PC, XSX

Do you remember the old Double Dragon games we used to play as kids? Yeah, the side-scrolling beat-em-up is back with Towerborne. It’s not a genre I’ve really sunk my teeth into since those Double Dragon days, but it’s one I’m glad is back.

We’ll get to co-op with our friends as we traverse the world of Towerborne and, presumably, try to get to the tower? I’m not too sure yet exactly what the story will be like, but the gameplay sure looks like a good time.

Mirthwood – 11 September

Platforms: PC

Mirthwood gave me a proper kick of nostalgia when I first booted it up. How couldn’t I, it attracted a decent amount of attention during both the Next Fest and Gamescom, and for good reason. It’s an intriguing premise, isn’t it!

Watch that trailer and tell me it doesn’t remind you of the first Fable? It sure does, fully equipped with the renown and morality systems, but also featuring a whole lot more to do. There are cozy, RPG elements in the mix as well.

I enjoyed the demo (which you can play for free right now), and I’ll definitely be back for the full release. Watch this one if you’re an RPG fan!

Reka – 11 September

Platforms: PC

Ever wanted to become a witch and learn from the legendary Baba Jaga? Now’s your chance, in this open-world… uh, witch simulator? It’s a game that features crafting elements and story, where you play as a young witch on their journey to become an old witch, I guess.

In all honesty, this game looks fantastic, and it’s certainly a great new indie title we should keep an eye on. The building, crafting, survival games always seems to have a certain appeal, and this is definitely the top entry for this month in gaming.

The Plucky Squire – 17 September

Platforms: PC, PS5, Switch, XSX

The Plucky squire is a 3D platformer… well, sometimes it’s 2D, and other times it’s kinda ISO, wait a second here. Let’s start again.

The Plucky Squire is an action-adventure game with a very interesting concept – the switch between perspectives that I tried to illustrate above. It certainly has potential to be one of those games that amasses a cult following very fast, and it’s certainly on our radar here at Upcomer.

With the story-book world being threatened by an evil wizard, you and your book friends need to jump in between the 2D and 3D worlds to save the day. The trailer is also thick with humor, so we can safely expect a funny game that doesn’t take itself too seriously.

Definitely a gem in the making, and you probably shouldn’t miss this one!

Enotria: The Last Song – 18 September

Platforms: PS5, PC

Another month, and another Souls-like hits our virtual shelves! There were some complaints on the demo being a little rough around the edges, with some janky animations and such. However, with more time to polish up the game, it’s looking good for the final release.

There’s plenty to digest in the trailer, and overall it looks like we have another epic title on our hands. Whether it’ll be a soft Souls-like (like Wukong) or something a bit more hardcore remains to be seen.

Overall, the OST is probably enough to hook most of us into at least giving this one a try.

Frostpunk 2 – 20 September

Platforms: PC

Oh boy, here comes a chart-topper, I’m sure. Given the success of the original, Frostpunk 2 offers more hardcore city management in a world gone to heck. But the main question is… will it be as challenging as the original, or will it soften up?

My vote is that it’s going to be just as tough, if not tougher. We’re in for a banger here, and those who enjoyed the original better update their calendars — it’s dropping on September 20, 2024.

Ara: History Untold – 24 September

Platforms: PC, XSX

Right, if I’m honest, that trailer could have been way better. Still though, we’re in for a brand new strategy game that looks like it’ll take us through the ages, from stone to space. It’s been a while since we had a super decent entry in this genre, and as a huge Empire Earth fan, it’s about time someone filled in the gaps.

If done right, it should be a fun play and I’m definitely looking forward to this one.

Greedfall II: The Dying World – 24 September

Platforms: PC, PS4, PS5, XSX, Xbox One

Greedfall 2 promises to be way bigger in scale than the first entry in the series, and fans of the original will surely flock to the latest title. It takes us beyond the borders of the original island, across the seas and to a brand new continent filled with even more political intrigue and (likely) punishing combat.

It’s certainly shaping up to be an ambitious title, and if this sounds like your kind of thing, you’d better mark that calendar.

Blacksmith Master – 26 September

Platforms: PC, Android, iOS

Are you into charming little mobile games (that are also available on PC, mind you)? Then you might want to check out this medieval blacksmith sim management game, coming towards the latter end of this month.

In it, you’ll get to run your very own blacksmith shop and fulfill the requests of the populace, all while (hopefully) becoming stinking rich in your little digital world!

It certainly has an element of charm and casual fun about it, and those types of games are always nice to just kick back and relax after a hard day of dying in Enotria, or something.

Breachway – 26 September

Platforms: PC

Now, here’s an interesting concept. When I first saw the images, I immediately thought of Faster than Light (remember that old gem). Instead of spaceship management, Breachway aims to provide us a spaceship deck-builder.

So, instead of controlling crew members, you’ll be playing cards. This sounds really interesting, and it’s another title backed by Hooded Horse (Blacksmith Master alongside it). So these should both be pretty interesting titles.

This one’s only on PC for now though.

EA Sports FC25 – 27 September

Platforms: All of them. (Switch, PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, XSX)

Ah, it’s that time of year where we get another glimpse of 2025 while there’s still a large chunk of 2024 left to go. Why do sports games do this?

Look, I’ve been playing these games since Fifa 1996, and I’ll be honest, I did try FC 24, and I’m back on Fifa 2023. It just feels like the players are a little too clumsy for me, and the smoothness we had in 2023 just went away.

I applaud the attempt to provide a more simulated experience, but as someone who plays football games (or soccer, for my American friends) for the career modes, I’m not all that into playing the latest title just for the sake of it.

Will I be lining up for FC25? You bet, and I really hope EA delivers a good game here. We’ll all be waiting in anticipation to see just how good (or bad) the latest entry is.

September’s Hot, right?

We really are spoiled, with so many games and potential gems coming this month. I’m excited to do some gaming, and you should be, as well. Obviously these aren’t all the games coming in September, and we’ve left hundreds of games out for the sake of brevity.

There are just the top of the crop that you’ll want to keep an eye out for if they’re your kind of thing.

I’ll deliver the next set of games next month, and let you know what we can look forward to in October. Until then, enjoy the games we’ve got coming!
