Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 features nine submachine guns (SMGs), and most of them are viable in Season 2. While the weapon balancing update in Season 2 did harm some of the game’s SMGs, a majority of them stayed intact from Season 1. Though this is great for weapon variety, players might have a hard time choosing between certain SMGs during their time with Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer.
In this guide, we will be showcasing our picks for the top five SMGs in Modern Warfare 2 Season 2. As a note, this list is subject to change depending on any weapon buffs/nerfs that arrive during Season 2.
5. PDSW 58
This list is started with the PDSW 58, which has come a long way since the start of Modern Warfare 2. Thanks to some recent buffs, the PDSW 58 finds itself in contention for one of the better SMGs in Season 2. However, it’s difficult to recommend the PDSW at any range other than close quarters, as it has a troubling damage range dropoff and high recoil. At close-range, though, the P90 replica can be a lethal killing machine.
4. VEL 46
The VEL 46 has also come along since the launch of MW2. Originally seen as a nerf shooter, the VEL 46 can now be a terrific all-around SMG in multiplayer. It has decent damage range, a great fire rate, minimal recoil, and high mobility. However, it’s not quite to the point where it can be considered a top three SMG.
3. Fennec 45
The Fennec 45 is a powerhouse of a weapon at close range, but it has seen a tremendous fall-off at long range in recent weeks. Season 2 has delivered two separate nerfs to the Fennec, making it a much weaker SMG compared to the top two weapons on this list. Still, the Fennec can be deadly at close range, with nothing being able to match its fire rate.
2. Lachmann Sub
The MP5 replica in MW2, the Lachmann Sub is so close to being the best SMG in MW2. It has all the stats to be a top weapon in multiplayer and not many weaknesses. However, the Lachmann Sub’s mobility is what’s holding it back, as it can’t aim down sights as fast as the top SMG on our list. The Lachmann Sub is still a dominant SMG in Season 2, though.
1. Vaznev-9K
There’s a reason that professional players in the CDL have used this SMG all throughout MW2. While the Vaznev-9K did receive a nerf in Season 2, that hasn’t quite been enough to remove it from the top spot in the SMG class. The Vaznev features superior mobility, damage range, and recoil control, making it a threat at any range. Although, players will have to shoot enemies more at long range to get a kill than they did pre-Season 2.
