After months and months of unconfirmed information, there’s finally official news on the Call of Duty League. Announced today by Activision and the COD League Twitter account, the new league is set to start in 2020. Consisting of 12 teams across North America and Europe, the COD League will participate in home and away games. These games will take place in each of the teams’ respective cities, set in arenas that are still unknown. While many organizations haven’t made an announcement, some have in terms of both personnel and the actual roster.

Although we’ve had guesses on most of this new information, it’s now confirmed by official channels. Here’s the official statement from the Call of Duty League’s new website:
The Call of Duty® League™ is a global, city-based esports league composed of 12 professional teams, representing 11 markets across North America and Europe. In its inaugural season, pro teams compete in 5-versus-5 Call of Duty®: Modern Warfare® multiplayer matches, exclusively on PlayStation®4. The professional competition will travel from city to city, featuring the best Call of Duty® esports players from around the globe battling for over $6 Million and the ultimate prize: The Call of Duty League Championship.
In the above statement, there’s nothing too shocking in terms of competitive Call of Duty. We already knew the main format; 5v5 was a given, as was the Playstation 4 exclusivity. However, one of the new pieces of intel is the $6 million prize pool.
To compare, the Overwatch League’s inaugural prize pool was $5 million. The chunk of the COD League’s $6 million pool will be given out at the Call of Duty League Championship. It appears Activision is keeping some of the previous league’s traditions alive.
CDL team names leaked
While most information from today was official, there were, of course, some leaks. On the league’s website, a majority of the CDL team names could be found within the source code. Alongside this, each team’s main color could be seen as well. We reported on some of these team names a couple of days ago.

- Dallas Empire
- OpTic Gaming Los Angeles
- Toronto Ultra
- Los Angeles Guerillas
- New York Subliners
- Atlanta Faze (Faze is not in the CDL officially)
- Paris Legion
- Florida Mutineers
- Minnesota Rokkr
As always, these are just leaks, even if they were found within the code of the official website. Things are subject to change between now and 2020. That said, we still don’t know when we’ll see official branding announcements from the CDL teams.
