Water Pokémon are always popular because they have few weaknesses, only Grass and Electric, and perform well against other popular types like Ground and Fire. While there are plenty of Water-types to choose from, a few stand out over the rest.

5. Primarina
Primarina is one of the starters from the Alola region. The Water/Fairy Pokémon got a lot of play earlier in the 2020 VGC format, and while it has lost some popularity due to Tapu Fini outshining it, it’s still a decent pick. It has a high special attack stat with a lot of coverage moves along with decent HP and defenses.
4. Rotom-Wash
Rotom’s Washing Machine form makes it Water/Electric-type. It’s one of the best Water Pokémon because of its typing and its Levitate ability. It has only one weakness (excluding Mold Breaker) which is Grass. It also has decent all-around stats which help it perform well in both singles and doubles battles.
3. Dracovish
Dracovish is one of the best physical Water attackers out there, second only to the next Pokémon on this list. Its unique move, Fishous Rend, does ridiculous damage when it moves first, especially combined with its Strong Jaw ability. While it isn’t as popular as it was prior to Urshifu showing up, it’s still a great option for singles and doubles battles.
2. Urshifu
Urshifu has become one of the most popular Pokémon for competitive battles in Pokémon Sword and Shield. The Water-type variant learns Surging Strikes, a physical attack that hits multiple times for critical hits. It can also learn Aqua Jet for priority and Close Combat for a strong Fighting attack.
1. Tapu Fini
Tapu Fini is arguably the best Water Pokémon in the current games, especially for doubles battles. Muddy Water is an excellent move for doubles and it also has Calm Mind to boost its damage and defenses further. If it isn’t taken care of quickly, it becomes an absolute menace to deal with.
