The 5 best ultimate abilities in Overwatch

This article is over 4 years old and may contain outdated information

Overwatch celebrated its anniversary recently, and the game has come a long way since 2016. We’ve seen new maps, new Heroes, and of course, new ultimate abilities. Let’s take a look at the five best Ultimates the game has to offer.

5. Genji – Dragonblade

Genji definitely hasn’t been one of the top Damage Heroes over the last couple of years. However, his ultimate remains one of the strongest in the game. He can swiftly eliminate squishy healers and damage Heroes if they don’t have a defensive ultimate or crowd control. If Genji is nano-boosted or damage-boosted, he can often eliminate three or four enemies, even if they do have defensive ultimates.

4. Reinhardt – Earthshatter

Reinhardt has been a staple in many Overwatch team compositions over the years, and his ultimate is a major reason why. As if the ability to knock over and stun the entire enemy team wasn’t scary enough, Earthshatter charges quite quickly as far as ultimates go. Even a mediocre Earthshatter can change the course of a fight. Just make sure the opposing team doesn’t block it with their own shield!

3. Zarya – Graviton Surge

Zarya’s ultimate is right there with Reinhardt’s. Both of these Heroes were essential in the infamous GOATs composition, and both of them still see a lot of play at all skill levels of Overwatch. Graviton Surge is the best ultimate for setting up huge wombo-combos, like with Hanzo’s Dragonstrike or Doomfist’s Meteor Strike. It does fine on its own too, and will most likely get your team a kill unless the enemy team has a Lucio (spoiler alert).

2. Lucio – Sound Barrier

Lucio has the best defensive ultimate ability in the game. Sound Barrier allows his teammates to survive devastating combos from the enemy team. It also isn’t countered by Ana’s Biotic Grenade like Zenyatta’s Transcendence (Lucio does need to watch out for enemy Sombra’s, however). Sound Barrier allows Lucio to protect his team while still playing his own game and providing speed boosts, healing, and damage.

1. Echo – Duplicate

Echo is the newest Hero to the Overwatch roster – and also one of the deadliest. She has the most versatile ultimate in the game, which can subsequently give her any of the above ultimates (and sometimes more than once). She also regains all her health and gets to play as a Hero of her choice for a short period of time. Duplicate gives her an unmatched level of versatility that she can tailor to each situation.

It will most likely be a while until we see another Hero added to the Overwatch roster. For now, it looks like these ultimates will be the best-in-show. Whose ultimate do you think is the best?
