Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s next DLC fighter comes from ARMS

Today, Nintendo treated everyone stuck in quarantine to a “Mini” Direct announcing new titles and giving updates on previously announced games. One thing most weren’t expecting was news on Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, specifically on characters for the second season of DLC fighters.

In an unusual move, Nintendo announced what series this new character would be from, but not what specific character. The series in question is ARMS, the unfortunately short-lived fighting game that released shortly after the launch of the Switch in 2017.

The mystery fighter

Despite being a fun and unique fighter, ARMS failed to gain much traction with players or the tournament scene. Even so, back then, most expected an ARMS character would join Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, as it was the only Switch-exclusive fighters at the time. That didn’t happen, however. Until today’s announcement, the most representation the series had in Smash was as a Spring Man and Ribbon Girl mask accessory for the Mii Fighters.

ARMS

Typically, if a character gets a Mii Costume in Smash, that means they will not join as a fully playable character. If this holds true, this would leave Spring Man and Ribbon Girl – essentially the Ryu and Chun Li of the game – out of the running. Still, the Direct showed an image of 15 ARMS characters without saying which one would be included. The most popular character outside of Spring Man and Ribbon Girl is easily Twintelle, so she is probably the safest bet. But only time will tell.

This new DLC character will release sometime in June. In the meantime, ARMS is now available to play for free for Nintendo Online members. This will run from today, March 26 at 9:00 a.m. PT, until Monday, April 6 at 11:59 p.m. PT. If you didn’t catch it the first time around, this is a great opportunity. It’s a fun, unique, and extremely underrated title in the Switch’s impressive catalog.

ARMS

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is available now for the Nintendo Switch. Season 2 of the Fighters Pass is available now for $29.99 on the Nintendo EShop.
