Smash Ultimate is Japan’s best-selling console game of the past decade

It may be over a year old now, but Super Smash Bros. Ultimate still seems to be hitting all the right notes. As it turns out, the latest entry in Nintendo’s Smash Bros. series has made a major impact in one country in particular: Japan. According to an industry expert, as of this week, Smash Ultimate has managed to hit lifetime sales of over 3.38 million physical copies in Japan alone. That makes it the best-selling console title of the past decade, at least in the land of the rising sun.

Granted, this number does not account for digital sales, but Japanese gamers tend to prefer physical copies, so adding those in would likely not change much. Either way, this is certainly quite the achievement for Nintendo and their game. Sporting a (still-growing) roster of 80 characters from numerous franchises and companies, this has been the biggest and best Smash Bros. yet, and fans just can’t seem to get enough of it.

What’s next for Smash

As previously reported, Smash Ultimate also took home the trophy for best fighting game at this year’s The Game Awards. That’s hardly all it has up its sleeves, too, as we still have the yet-unknown fifth DLC fighter on the way. Nintendo has also promised even more fighters will join the roster in the future, too. Of course, every fan has their own favorites that they want to see join. But who will they be?

For now, all we can do is wait until Nintendo is ready to tell us. Whoever they end up choosing, the momentum of this game will no doubt continue strong into 2020. Super Smash Bros. remains a classic staple in the fighting game genre, and it isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. So buckle up, Smash fans: we’ve got a whole new year of excitement just around the corner.
