Shuto “Shuton” Moriya won Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Singles at Sumabato SP 5 in Osaka, Japan on June 22. The event featured many high-level Japanese players. In addition, Sumabato SP 5 reached its 320-entrant cap less than three minutes after registration opened.

Shuton advanced into top 8 by defeating the likes of Kaito “Shogun” Kawasaki and Kome. Shogun was the only player who managed to take a game off of Shuton prior to Winners Finals. In Winners Semis, Shuton took a set off of Lunamado.

Shuton met Isami “T” Ikeda in Winners Finals. Shuton won their set 2-1. T reversed this situation later on, winning the first set of Grand Finals over Shuton 2-1. However, Shuton was able to 2-0 T in order to win the second set of grands and the Ultimate Singles tournament.

Sumabato SP 5 continues a string of solid 1st place finishes for Shuton. His streak began with Stunfest 2019 in May. Prior to his 9th place finish at Umebura Japan Major 2019, Shuton also had a three-tournament win streak. Shuton has continued to assert himself as one of the best players in Japan, and one of the best in the world as a result.

Big upsets from Sumabato SP 5

With such a deep talent pool in attendance, it is not too surprising that Sumabato SP 5 featured many upsets. Luigi main Navy entered this tournament as the No. 4 seed. However, he lost his round one match to No. 125 seed akasa.

Navy made a decently long run through the losers bracket. However, he ended up placing 25th after losing a match to Samus main Parme. Parme had a very respectable losers run himself. He also beat Oisiitofu, Tomoki “kept” Ikeda, Kie, and Manzoku en route to 13th place.

Lunamado likewise had a solid 5th place finish, using an interesting mix of characters in Bowser, Palutena, and Luigi. He defeated the likes of Masashi, Phisakura, and Sota “Zackray” Okada. Interestingly, Lunamado also upset Zackray the last time they played at KVOxTSB 2019.
