S2J wins Super Smash Bros. Melee Singles at Rollback Rumble: NA West II

Johnny “S2J” Kim won Super Smash Bros. Melee Singles at Rollback Rumble: NA West II on Jan. 22. S2J is no stranger to claiming 1st place at Brandon “HomeMadeWaffles” Collier’s online tournaments. He previously won four Rona Rumble tournaments, making him the winningest West Coast player for the series.

S2J swept through pools without dropping a game. Similarly, he secured a comfortable 3-0 victory over Samuel “Pancakes” Medrano in top 32. After defeating Connor Nguyen 3-1, S2J cruised into top 8 on winners side. He kept up this dominant pace even in top 8, where he beat Elliot Moffat-Shojania 3-0.

However, S2J then suffered an 0-3 loss of his own at the hands of Zachary “SFAT” Cordoni. But after scoring a 3-1 win against Juan “Medz” Garcia in Losers Finals, he got to rematch SFAT in Grands. S2J beat the reigning champion 3-1 in set one and 3-2 in set two to win Rollback Rumble: NA West II.

Other results from Rollback Rumble: NA West II

Though he failed to repeat his 1st place finish from last week, SFAT still had a solid run at Rollback Rumble: NA West II. Specifically, he made a deep run through the winners bracket, making it all the way to Grand Finals. SFAT beat Nick “yingling” Yingling 3-0, Aaron “ALP” Espinoza 3-1, Armand “ARMY” Del Duca 3-1, and S2J 3-0.

Medz had an unexpected run to 3rd place at this event. Impressively, he did so despite suffering an early loss to ARMY in top 32. Medz’ losers run saw him eliminate Connor 3-0 and win his runback against ARMY 3-0. In addition, he defeated Miles “Soonsay” Foster 3-2 in Losers Semis.

ARMY’s 5th place finish at Rollback Rumble: NA West II was similarly unexpected. Despite being a top 30 player offline, ARMY previously struggled to find the same success online. However, he managed to upset Medz 3-2 and Soonsay 3-0 on his path to top 8 at this tournament.
