Johnny “S2J” Kim and DaJuan “Shroomed” McDaniel won Super Smash Bros. Melee Doubles at Get On My Level 2019 on May 17. Get On My Level is a Super Smash Bros. tournament series in Toronto, Canada.

S2J and Shroomed (known together as Korean Fried Chicken, or KFC) defeated Zain “Zain” Naghmi and Kashan “Chillindude” Khan before losing to Jeffrey “Axe” Williamson and Masaya “aMSa” Chikamoto in Winners Semifinals. Team KFC then made a run through the losers bracket. They defeated Joey “Lucky” Aldama and Weston “Westballz” Dennis, Justin “Plup” McGrath and Justin “Wizzrobe” Hallett, and Ryan Ford and Kurtis “moky” Pratt.

S2J and Shroomed won two Grand Finals sets against Axe and aMSa to win GOML Melee Doubles. The pair dropped only one game across these two sets. Get On My Level 2019 marks the first Doubles tournament victory for S2J and Shroomed since Runback 2018 in July.

This victory in GOML Melee Doubles is a continuation of S2J’s success in recent months. This win is perhaps more important for Shroomed, who has not had the same kind of explosive success. Despite being a former top 10 Melee player, Shroomed dropped down to 29th in the world on the MPGR 2018. He has also had a slow start to this year. Shroomed placed 97th at GENESIS 6 in February, losing to Jeremy “JBash” Basheda and Harrison “HTwa” Turner, players ranked much lower than him.

Other Doubles results

Axe and aMSa have teamed together off and on since Smash Summit 5 in November 2017. Their 2nd place finish in GOML Melee Doubles is their highest Doubles placing to date. They made a run to Winners Finals by beating Edgard “n0ne” Sheleby and Ryan “La Luna” Coker-Welch, S2J and Shroomed, and Ryan Ford and moky. They ultimately fell to KFC in Grand Finals. Axe and aMSa are renowned for their success with unorthodox characters, as they are ranked top 10 in the world with Pikachu and Yoshi, respectively.

Ryan Ford and moky were the hometown heroes of this Doubles event. Both players hail from Canada, and both have been relatively inactive this year. In fact, moky claimed to retire from competitive Melee in March. Nevertheless, these two beat Lucky and Westballz and then Wizzrobe and Plup in order to place 3rd in GOML Melee Doubles.
