Rocket League is available on next gen consoles at launch

As expected, Rocket League is coming to the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S. Psyonix announced that the game will be available at launch and will get some console-specific updates later in the year.

Rocket League will have a 120 FPS mode on next gen Xbox

On both the Xbox Series X and S, Rocket League will have a performance mode and a quality mode. Series X performance mode plays at 2688×1512 resolution (70% of 4K) and 120 frames per second. The Series S version runs 1344×756 (70% of 1080p). Those who are fine with playing at 60 FPS can select the quality mode, which is 4K with HDR on the Series X, and 1080p with HDR on the Series S.

The PlayStation 5, on the other hand, can only run up to 60 FPS. This is due to the way the console handles backward compatibility. Essentially, the PlayStation 5 is playing the PS4 version of Rocket League in backward compatibility mode and therefore cannot run it at 120 FPS. Whether Psyonix will update the game to the same standard as Xbox is yet unknown, but it seems unlikely that they wouldn’t. However, it should be noted that Psyonix’s Devin Connors addressed this question by saying: “Nothing to share on this beyond what’s in the blog.”

Another question is if the input lag of the game is lower on the next-gen consoles. Those who are used to playing Rocket League on PC will likely find the current-gen console version to be nigh-unplayable. New powerhouses like the PS5 and Series X/S should logically be more responsive, but we’ll have to wait for community feedback whether this is the case.

DualSense support on PC

Psyonix did address questions on the PlayStation 5’s new DualSense controller. While the controller isn’t natively supported on PC immediately, they confirmed that Rocket League players on PC can look forward to official DualSense support in a future update.

Professional player Garrett “GarrettG” Gordon has already voiced his approval for the DualSense controller.
