Week 8 of the Overwatch League (OWL) is over, and we finally got to see the rest of the Pacific Conference teams play. Here are some takeaways from the weekend’s games.
Seoul’s strong start
The Seoul Dynasty played their first two matches of the 2020 OWL season this weekend, and they came charging out of the gates. They beat the Los Angeles Valiant 3-0 on Saturday and the Los Angeles Gladiators 3-0 on Sunday. Their 2-0 start puts them in first place in the standings on the year.
With some great offseason acquisitions in Joon-yeong “Profit” Park, Jae-hee “Gesture” Hong, and Seung-tae “Bdosin” Choi, Seoul was second on our Power Rankings at the beginning of the year. They didn’t miss a beat with all the time off and looked dominant against two solid teams.
San Francisco drops both matches
On the other hand, the first team in our power rankings, the 2019 OWL champions of San Francisco Shock, didn’t look so hot this weekend. While Seoul beat both Los Angeles teams, San Francisco lost to both of them. They started the season 1-0 and looked good in their friendly matches, but lost both of these matches 3-1.
One interesting thing to note here is that they had Jay “Sinatraa” Won playing tank instead of damage. It will be interesting to see how they put their roster together for future games, and if it was even a roster problem. Hero Pools could also play a factor in every team’s success.
The Chinese teams in gridlock
The Chinese teams all finished with one victory and one defeat in their first weekend. All four teams played against each other, and both teams that won on Saturday lost on Sunday. It looks like those games should be pretty wild moving forward.
