Overwatch 2 will change how level borders will look

This article is over 4 years old and may contain outdated information

Are you sick of other players harassing you for having a gold level border in Overwatch? When Overwatch 2 releases, you might not have to. A few days ago on a forum post, Jeff Kaplan stated that Blizzard will change the appearance of level borders in the upcoming game.

The forum post discusses how ugly the border is, and how the user doesn’t want to have to wear it. In response, Jeff Kaplan personally states: “currently our plan is to change this system for ow2. we’ll find a way to recognize your accomplishments for those who care but the current plan is for those borders to go away and be replaced with a different system.”

Flaws with the current Overwatch level system

Currently, your player level appears as a border around the picture of the hero you’re currently playing. There is no way to remove or change this border, and every other player in the game can see it.

Despite the complaints that these borders are ugly, they also show how much time someone has put into Overwatch. This means that players can see if someone is brand new or has played hundreds of hours. And unfortunately, some players used this information as fuel for toxicity in games.

How Blizzard can change it

Kaplan doesn’t state much about how the system might change. It’s likely that we won’t know until Overwatch 2 releases. There are several things they can consider, however.

The most obvious solution would be to let players choose which border to use. This way they could hide it completely, or choose their favorite. This would also open up options for cosmetic border items.

We still don’t know too much about Overwatch 2, other than what we have heard at BlizzCon in 2019 along with a few leaks. Hopefully, we won’t have long to wait to hear more.
