Based in Miami, David Grutman has had several years in the hospitality industry. In addition to forming Groot Hospitality, his portfolio boasts locations such as Planta South Beach, Komodo, Story, LIV, OTL, and Swan and Bar Bevy.

“I have a passion for supporting the leaders in every field,” Grutman said. “Similar to what I do with my existing portfolio, I’m excited to help amplify Overactive Media’s reach into the global esports industry.”

OverActive Media is also thrilled to welcome Grutman aboard the team. “David is among the most successful hospitality and nightlife entertainment moguls in the U.S. and we are happy that he is investing into the work we’re doing to grow the esports industry globally,” Chris Overholt, the CEO and President of OverActive Media said.

Overholt added that the organization is continuing its mission to attract “high calibre investments.” Since last fall, OverActive Media has raised over $43 million in terms of private funding.

A few weeks ago, musician Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye joined OverActive Media as a global ambassador to amp up content creation.

“As a big esports fan, I am really excited to be involved in this project,” The Weeknd said when he joined. “I am looking forward to collaborating with OverActive Media in unique and innovative ways.”

Overholt noted how The Weeknd’s standing in the music industry would help both Toronto Defiant and Splyce in terms of engaging new audiences and reaching more fans.

In addition to its involvement with Toronto Defiant in the Overwatch League, the esports organization and global esports brand are owners of teams in the Call of Duty World League, League of Legends European Championship, Starcraft, Smite, and Rocket League.
