Team Japan came out as the winner for the 2019 Smash Brothers Ultimate World Championship, and Doug Bowser, the current president of Nintendo of America, came out to congratulate the team on their success. While doing so, he also announced the 2019 Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Online Open tournament, which will start in June. The winners of this event will be sent to EVO 2019 in August.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Online Open
Along with the announcement for the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Online Open, a ruleset was also posted. This addresses aspects like tournament registration, player check-in, how to report scores, and frequently asked questions. The tournament structure is also written in the later part of the ruleset document.
The format is a best of 3 one-on-one in single elimination. Players have a limited selection of items. However, in the regional winners round, there will not be any items available during the competition. Some other rules also differ between the two rounds. The stages available for selection include Battlefield, Final Destination, Frigate Orpheon, Yoshi’s Island, Pokémon Stadium 2, Castle Siege, and Smashville.
The Online Open event is hosted by Nintendo this time. For this reason, Nintendo will also be paying for the competitors. For those that qualify from the event, Nintendo of America will compensate them with accommodations like travel, stay, and a prize package. This year’s Evolution Championship Series event is also considered Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s biggest event.
Registration for event
The 2019 June Online Open competition is split up into 8 regions. You will be placed in a region based on where you compete, and players can only compete from one region. Attempting to qualify for multiple regions will lead to disqualification. The finalists from each of the 8 regions will pair against another region’s finalists. The winner of each of the final 4 paired brackets will then advance to EVO 2019.
The event will be open to players of 13 years old and up. They have to be located in the United States or Canada, minus Quebec. Players from Mexico can also join, but they must be 18 years of age and older. Registration for the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Online Open is open at the moment. It will close at 7:00 AM PT on June 29.
The 2019 Evolution Championship Series tournament takes place between August 2 and 4 in Las Vegas. Will you be watching this event? Who are you rooting for? Let us know in the comments, and keep up with all of the latest Smash news and content here at Daily Esports.
