Nintendo announces Smash Ultimate Direct during EVO Melee finals

With news that Smash Ultimate is coming out in December, Nintendo doesn’t have a whole lot of time to announce what changes are being made and what characters might be added. However, they still want to keep the community updated on what’s going on with the game. Nintendo will surely host a few Direct presentations about the game, and it just announced the next of these.

Right before the Melee grand finals began at EVO, Nintendo announced it had a special message for viewers. This message was very short but equally exciting. It announced that there would be a Nintendo Direct about Smash Ultimate on August 8 at 7:00 AM PST. Besides the time, however, they provided no other information on the contents of the Direct, so we’ll have to wait and see.

What could we see?

Perhaps the Direct will have some information on changes that they’ve made to characters since the invitational. After all, we were told that the game is not yet finished. And that’s no surprise, given that a player at E3’s Invitational hit a Bayonetta ladder combo.

It’s also very possible that they’ll be letting people know what future events will have demos of Ultimate. Plenty of big events have had those so far, and there’s no reason for that to change. But if that is the case, Nintendo might even tell us which additional characters will be playable in future demo versions.

For now, however, all these exciting prospects are just theories. In reality, nobody will know until August 8. It’s a little early for American audiences, but people will definitely make themselves wake up early for news such as this. Even Gonzalo “ZeRo” Barrios, who says he can’t wake up before noon, will be awake to watch it.

Announcing a Direct three days before it’s happening is a bold move, but not an uncommon one for Nintendo. After all, they know people will show up to watch even on short notice.
