NFL star Marcus Mariota: New Call of Duty feels like “old Modern Warfare”

This article is over 6 years old and may contain outdated information

It’s that time of year again for Call of Duty fans. Around late April each year, new information starts to leak about the new title releasing in the fall. Various celebrities, athletes, and playtesters usually get early access, which is where the leaks originate.

This time around is no different, as several NFL players and draft prospects were flown out to play the game early. Among these players was Tennessee Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota, who slipped some interesting tidbits.

Slip of the tongue?

For those unaware, the annual NFL Draft is being held this week in Nashville. Since many pro athletes partake in video games, some developers took this chance to gain some publicity.

Activision set up a makeshift studio in Nashville where these players and draft prospects could play the new COD. The NFL also teamed up with Twitch personalities, giving popular streamer “Nickmercs” the chance to play Fortnite with NFL players.

Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota double dipped with these events, participating in both the COD and Fortnite events. He and Nickmercs sat down for a few games of Fortnite before the draft started yesterday.

In this play session, Mariota revealed he was among the few who got to play the new Call of Duty. Nickmercs was a prominent Call of Duty streamer before his Fortnite career took off, so there was some mutual interest.

When talking about the new COD, Mariota had this to say:

They just let me uh….we just played the new one. Yea, it’s pretty dope. It’s like the old..it’s like the old Modern Warfare.

Whether this was a slip-up by the quarterback or not, it confirms many fans’ suspicions. While nothing is official, a return to Modern Warfare seems all but a certainty.

Returning to the glory days

Any avid Call of Duty fan will tell you the days of Modern Warfare 1, 2, and 3 were some of the best years for COD. Times were simpler, and developer Infinity Ward launched complete games that felt great and innovated the franchise.

Well, if what Mariota says reigns true, the long-awaited return to Modern Warfare is coming.

The speculation for Modern Warfare 4 has been present since the middle of 2018. Infinity Ward and Activision know the recent string of titles hasn’t been up to snuff, and fans have been clamoring for a return to modern times.

Hearing what Mariota said, along with all of the other leaks, just reaffirms this is happening. Now, all we can do is wait until Activision makes its move and give us some official information.
