Nairoby “Nairo” Quezada & Rasheen “Dark Wizzy” Rose won Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Doubles at Smash’N’Splash 5 in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin. Smash Ultimate Doubles concluded on June 1.
Despite stiff competition, Nairo and Dark Wizzy won the Doubles tournament without dropping a single set. They made it into top 8 by defeating Landon “Captain L” Trybuch & Frederic “Fwed” Levreault and Yatiyaña “yeti” Schaper & Brett “8BitMan” Esposito. From there, they earned 1st by beating Luis “Lui$” Oceguera & Mikee “Mikee” Perez and double eliminating Elliot “Ally” Carroza-Oyarce & Ramin “Mr. R” Delshad.
Ally notably won Doubles at the previous supermajor, MomoCon 2019, alongside Ezra “Samsora” Morris. Dark Wizzy placed 5th in MomoCon Doubles alongside Saleem “Salem” Young. Nairo placed 13th in MomoCon Doubles alongside Paris “Light” Ramirez.
Unexpected Smash’n’Splash Doubles top 8 appearances
The top players in Grand Finals of Smash’N’Splash Doubles were no strangers to the top 8 spotlight. However, the 3rd and 4th place finishers would have been a bit harder to predict. Robert “Myran” Herrin & Spencer “BestNess” Garner teamed together and are both members of Armada Esports. Together, they placed 3rd by beating Eric “Mr E” Weber & Alan “Gen” Soriano, Guillermo “Stroder” Martinez Jr. & Eric “Pandarian” Lund, and Lui$ & Mikee.
Lui$ & Mikee pulled off an impressive string of upsets on their way to 4th place in Smash’N’Splash Doubles. They defeated Leonardo “MkLeo” Perez & Jason “Mew2King” Zimmerman, Brian “Cosmos” Kalu & Pariz “Light” Ramirez, and Zack “CaptainZack” Lauth & Samsora.
In contrast, a handful of top players failed to make top 8 as fans may have expected of them. MkLeo finished in 1st in Singles at MomoCon 2019 and in Doubles at Get On My Level 2019. In comparison to these, he underperformed to place 13th in Smash’N’Splash Doubles with Mew2King. MkLeo & Mew2King were upset by Lui$ & Mikee and Andrew “ScAtt” Huntley & Tyler “Tyroy” Awdisho.
Similarly, James “VoiD” Makekau-Tyson & Tyrell “NAKAT” Coleman fell out of the tournament before top 8. They have been static partners since the days of Smash 4 when they were both endorsed by Counter Logic Gaming. However, they finished in 9th at Smash’N’Splash 5 Doubles. Along the way, they lost to Ally & Mr. R and Samsora & CaptainZack.
