Leonardo “MkLeo” Perez won Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Singles at 2GG: Kongo Saga in La Mirada, California on Dec 8. This was the last S-tier of the Fall 2019 PGRU season. MkLeo has not placed lower than 1st at a PGR-eligible tournament since Mainstage in September.
The competition proved tough for MkLeo early on, as he dropped a game to Daniel “ven” Salas in pools. However, he seemed as dominant as expected in top 64, earning 3-0 victories over Robert “Myran” Herrin and Masaki “Umeki” Shimizu. MkLeo advanced into winners side of top 8 following a 3-1 win over Takuma “Tea” Hirooka.
In Winners Semis of 2GG: Kongo Saga, MkLeo scored another 3-1 victory against Isami “T” Ikeda. Gavin “Tweek” Dempsey proved to be MkLeo’s toughest challenger at the tournament. MkLeo won their Winners Finals set 3-2. They faced off again in Grand Finals, with Tweek claiming victory in the first two games. However, MkLeo pulled off a reverse 3-0 in order to beat Tweek again and win the tournament.
2GG: Kongo Saga was MkLeo’s third S-tier tournament win of the season. He previously won EVO 2019 and Super Smash Con 2019. Notably, MkLeo is the only person who has won more than one S-tier this season. He also boasts winning records against players like Tweek, Tyler “Marss” Martins, Ezra Samsora Morris, and Nairoby “Nairo” Quezada.
Other results from 2GG: Kongo Saga
Tweek had a solid showing at 2GG: Kongo Saga, finishing in second place. Unlike MkLeo’s fairly smooth run, Tweek had an exhausting slog through top 64. In fact, all but one of Tweek’s sets after pools went to game five. Nevertheless, Tweek proved resilient, earning wins over Tsubasa “Tsu” Takuma, Shuto “Shuton” Moriya, and Samsora.
In top 8, Tweek defeated William “Glutonny” Belaid and Enrique “Maister” Hernández Solís (his only 3-1 win of the bracket). This was an important finish to the season for Tweek, considering his recent 13th place finishes at DreamHack Atlanta 2019 and Smash Ultimate Summit 2.
Despite a fairly early loss to Tea, Maister made a strong losers run to finish in 3rd place. He made it to top 8 by defeating Kaito “Shogun” Kawasaki, Takuto “Kameme” Ono, and Chris “WaDi” Boston. Maister’s run through top 8 was particularly dominant, as he beat Samsora 3-1, T 3-0, and Light 3-0. He even prompted Samsora to play as Zero Suit Samus, given Maister’s past success against Samsora’s Peach.
Many talented Japanese players attended 2GG: Kongo Saga, but it was surprising to see which two actually made top 8. T finished 5th, taking sets off of Sota “Zackray” Okada, “Gackt”, and Samuel “Dabuz” Buzby. “Lea” placed 7th, defeating Myran, Carrington “Wrath” Osborne, Shuton, Alexis “Goblin” Stennett, and Dabuz.
As with many other stacked Smash Ultimate tournaments, 2GG: Kongo Saga featured several upsets. Before top 64, Gackt beat James “VoiD” Makekau-Tyson, Dawson “Big D” Perron beat “ProtoBanham”, and “Runes” beat Kengo “KEN” Suzuki. Notably, Tomoki “kept” Ikeda lost to Guillermo “Stroder” Martinez Jr. for 129th place, as they were both upset early.
