Joseph “Mang0” Marquez won Super Smash Bros. Melee Singles at his own birthday tournament in Toronto, Canada on Dec 8. Mang0’s Birthday Bash was held at Red Bull AdrenaLAN and livestreamed on Mang0’s own Twitch channel.
Mang0 reached top 16 with no trouble, taking out James “Duck” Ma’s secondary Sheik along the way. He then fought Edgard “n0ne” Sheleby, a rematch from EGLX. In their previous set, n0ne became the first Captain Falcon player to beat Mang0 in a decade. However, after losing the first game of this set, Mang0 proceeded to convincingly sweep the next three games against n0ne.
Mang0 continued to show his dominance in top 8 with a 3-1 win over Zain Naghmi. He advanced into Grand Finals with another 3-1 victory over Aziz “Hax” Al-Yami. Mang0 finished off his tournament run with yet another 3-1 win, this time against No. 1 seed Juan “Hungrybox” DeBiedma. Despite the high level of competition at Mang0’s Birthday Bash, no one could even push Mang0 to game five.
Mang0’s Birthday Bash was Mang0’s third tournament victory of the year, following GOML 2019 and The Big House 9. In addition, Mang0 boasts a respectable matchup spread against other top 6 players. He is 4-3 against Zain, 2-1 against Jeffrey “Axe” Williamson, 2-2 against William “Leffen” Hjelte, and 3-4 against Hungrybox. As a result, many have speculated that Mang0 could finish as high as No. 2 on the global year-end rankings.

Other results from Mang0’s Birthday Bash
Hax made a run to 3rd place at Mang0’s Birthday Bash, marking his first major top 8 finish this year. He reached top 8 on winners side by scoring upsets over Joey “Lucky” Aldama and Hungrybox. Afterward, he was floated into Winners Finals, as James “Swedish Delight” Liu dropped out to catch a flight. (Swedish Delight had upset Justin “Plup” McGrath in Winners Quarters.) Hax ended up losing his set against Mang0 and his rematch against Hungrybox.
Despite his early loss to Hax, Hungrybox made an impressive losers run to reach Grand Finals at Mang0’s Birthday Bash. He made it into top 8 after a 3-0 win over Damian “Damian Tyson” Scaligine. Hungrybox then found himself in Losers Finals after beating Plup 3-1, Zain 3-2, and n0ne 3-0. He narrowly overcame Hax in their rematch set, but fell short against Mang0 in Grand Finals.
