League of Legends: Wild Rift brings to MOBA to mobile and console

This article is over 4 years old and may contain outdated information

During League of Legends’ 10-year anniversary event, Riot Games Executive Producer Michael “Riot Paladin” Chow revealed that the game is coming to both mobile and console. The new game will be named League of Legends: Wild Rift. Notice that it is called a new game, rather than a simple port, as many would have expected.

League of Legends Mobile

Wild Rift is treated as a completely new game because it was built entirely from scratch. The models, animations, game systems, mechanics, and more have all been refreshed. It still features the usual League of Legends gameplay, but the Riot developers didn’t want to just make a simple port.

While the unlocked skins on the PC version will not be transferred over, players will receive rewards for their time on PC. Still, the game will remain free-to-play, just like the PC version. All champions can be earned for free, but players can also choose to purchase in-game currency for cosmetic in-game items. There will be a traditional ranked ladder with cosmetic rewards as well.

Wild Rift will initially launch with around 40 champions, but with slight changes because of the different mobile controls. Matches will take an average of 15 – 18 minutes, and we’ll see brand new maps as well.

All about Wild Rift

One big question many fans may have is whether or not League of Legends: Wild Rift will be a cross-platform game. Riot addressed this when discussing how the game differs from the PC version. As it turns out, cross-platform will not be supported. The mechanics available to players using mobile controls are vastly different than those playing with a keyboard and mouse. This would require the devs to make compromises that would create disadvantages in the competitive scene. Riot did mention that they are exploring the possibility, but with no guarantees.

In terms of minimum specs, players on Android will need to have the equivalent to a Samsung Galaxy A7 with 1GB RAM, Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor, and Adreno 306 GPU. Those on iOS will need to have the iPhone 5S or newer. The game will release first in China on iOS and Android devices. The mobile version will then be available everywhere else by the end of 2020. The console version will be the last to be released.

The new game will have an open beta, and pre-registration is available on the Wild Rift website. The process of rolling alpha and beta stages will go until the end of 2019. Further information and updates can be found on the Wild Rift social media pages and website.

Will the mobile game have much success, even though mobile MOBA games are most popular in Asia? Let us know with what you think, and keep up with Daily Esports for all of your League of Legends coverage.
