Juan “Hungrybox” DeBiedma won Super Smash Bros. Melee Singles at CEO Dreamland 2020 in Orlando, Florida on March 15. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, this will be the last major Super Smash Bros. tournament for the foreseeable future.

Initially, Hungrybox ran through the bracket smoothly as expected. Along the way, he flawlessly defeated the likes of Austin “Austintacious” Burch and Benjamin “Chef Rach” Rachman. However, Hungrybox looked surprisingly shaky beginning in top 16.

Hungrybox dropped games to Kyle Krudo and Colin “Colbol” Green, both of whom he was expected to beat easily. In Winners Finals, Hungrybox narrowly overcame Edgard “n0ne” Sheleby after trailing for most of the set. However, he cleaned up his play in Grand Finals, beating Colbol 3-0 to win CEO Dreamland 2020 Melee Singles.

CEO Dreamland 2020 was significantly less stacked than originally slated, with many players dropping out. Among them were Justin “Plup” McGrath, Jason “Mew2King” Zimmerman, Jeffrey “Axe” Williamson, Justin “Wizzrobe” Hallett, and Johnny “S2J” Kim. Even so, Hungrybox’s victory was a nice addition to the résumé of the incumbent No. 1 player.

Other results from CEO Dreamland 2020 Melee Singles

Colbol is renowned for his prowess against Captain Falcon. Given this fact, it was fortuitous that his CEO Dreamland 2020 Melee bracket was filled with mostly Captain Falcon players. Colbol beat Chef Rach and n0ne, in addition to double-eliminating Gahtzu. All the while, he only dropped sets to the best player in the world.

On his road to 3rd place, n0ne defeated Brandon “Panda” Orooji, while losing five-game sets to both Hungrybox and Colbol. Notably, n0ne opted not to accept his prize money for this event. He made this decision in order to help tournament organizer Alex Jebailey cover the financial losses from widespread dropouts.

Chef Rach had an impressive run to 5th place as the No. 16 seed at CEO Dreamland 2020 Melee Singles. His run started with wins over David “Lad” Fine and Jordan “JRad” Conrad. Then Chef Rach defeated Keenan Blair, “blankshooter744,” and Leighton Ivy.
