How does the new 1v1 Gulag work in Warzone 2 Season 2?

A return to the original

One of the biggest complaints from the Call of Duty: Warzone 2 community since the game launched in November has been about the Gulag.

In an effort to try and shake things up from the original Warzone, the developers decided to completely change how the Gulag works. While the winning team still got to go back into the game after they died, the way this worked was drastically altered.

Instead of it being a 1v1 duel with preset loadouts, players found themselves in a 2v2 battle and started out with a pistol only. Additional loot items could be found across the new map. Perhaps the biggest and most controversial change, though, was the addition of the Jailer. This NPC arrived halfway through a Gulag match and tried to eliminate any player still alive. If either team killed the Jailer, they would all be sent back into the game.

However, players found this to be annoying addition that simply made it more difficult to kill the players on the other team. Fortunately for fans of the old 1v1 Gulag, Activision has decided to bring it back for Season 2 of Warzone 2.

As revealed in the new Season 2 community blog post, the upcoming seasonal update on Feb. 15 will revert most of the new changes made to the Gulag. Players will be in a normal 1v1 battle and there will be no Jailer that comes throughout the match.

If no player has killed each other after a certain amount of time, the classic overtime rules will come into effect. These are the same rules that were in the original Gulag in Warzone 1. There will be a flag in the center of the map and a timer that goes down. Players must either capture the flag point before time runs down or eliminate the other player. If no player is eliminated and the flag isn’t captured by the time the timer is out, both players will die and not return to the match.

Veteran Warzone players are likely thrilled to see this change and new Warzone 2 players will get to experience the classic Gulag in all of its glory. Season 2 of Warzone 2 and Modern Warfare 2 will launch on Feb. 15.
