“Well, the current bot meta is not about fighting back and forth during the laning phase, so if that were the meta, I would’ve just smashed him,” Ruler said. “But I still have one more game to play against him, so next time I will make sure I will clap him [CoreJJ].”

Ruler vs CoreJJ at Worlds 2021

While those are bold words, the two players are no strangers to each other, having played on the same team for two years. In fact, Ruler once said CoreJJ was like a big brother who took care of him outside the game.

Ruler’s entrance into the then Samsung Galaxy roster was the end of CoreJJ’s time as the team’s bot laner. Having shared the position with Lee “Stitch” Seung-Ju in the 2016 Spring Split, CoreJJ swapped to support to accommodate Ruler in the team. The swap turned out to be successful, as the team won the 2017 World Championship. They also finished in second place the year prior.

Before heading into Worlds 2021, Core JJ identified the Gen.G bot lane as the one he was excited to face. To him, they were the best bot lane duo in the game. Even though Gen.G picked a Miss Fortune-Amumu combination, which has seen less success throughout the tournament, they were still able to stand their ground against Team Liquid. While Core JJ found success roaming on the Shen, his team were not able to stop Gen.G from taking control of the game

Gen.G finishing the first half of the Worlds 2021 group stage with two wins puts them in a better position than TL. It also gives Ruler more confidence in fulfilling his goal to clap CoreJJ in the rematch.
