Former G2 ADC Hjarnan added to Excel Esports

Excel Esports announced the addition of former G2 ADC Petter “Hjarnan” Freyschuss to their roster on Wednesday. This comes in lieu of a season where Excel finished 9th in the LEC.

Excellent addition?

Excel was one of the bottom teams in Spring. In particular, ADC Jesper “Jeskla” Klarin came under fire for serving as the second worst at his role in the LEC, statistically. Things started to look up with the benching of support Raymond “kaSing” Tsang in favor of rookie Patryk “Mystiques” Piórkowski, though. This gained them upset victories over FC Schalke 04 and Vitality in the last two weeks of play.

Despite this, it appears Excel are not content with potential improvement. Instead, they sought out a proven name in the scene. Many have labeled Hjarnan as the best Heimerdinger player in the world. He is also well known as the ADC of the G2 team that made Worlds Semifinals over a dominant Uzi-led Royal Never Give Up.

Hjarnan’s role?

Excel, as a team, primarily play around their solo laners Ki “Expect” Dae-han and Joran “Special” Scheffer. They showed up as solid but not star-level players in Spring. If Hjarnan is being brought in to start over Jeskla, we can assume that he will fulfill a similar role as he did on G2: a backup plan in case the other lanes falter.

The biggest question surrounds his partner in the bottom lane. While kaSing was benched for Mystique, Hjarnan has a history of playing with kaSing back in 2015 on the H2k team that attended Worlds. The common perception is that the decline in kaSing’s play and the flashes of potential by Mystique will lead to new coach David “DLim” Lim starting the rookie once again.
