FC Barcelona joins RLCS as the second football club

After a strong season in RLRS and an impressive promotion run to the RLCS, unsigned team “Savage!” was revealed to have been signed by FC Barcelona. Coming off a strong performance at DreamHack Leipzig (third place), they are looking like one of the top teams in Europe. All that was missing was an organization to back them up. And while rumors were already floating about, it’s good to have confirmation that one of the biggest football clubs in the world has joined Rocket League, after Paris Saint-Germain joined back in 2017. While several other European clubs have smaller-scale Rocket League teams, FCB is the second to be playing at the highest tier of Rocket League esports.

Savage’s impressive record

Last season, Barça’s new signing Daniel “Bluey” Bluett was sent to the substitute role for his team PSG. This subsequently led to Bluey leaving PSG in order to form a new team with David “Deevo” Morrow, who had been replaced on Team Envy, to start from the bottom of the ladder again. Together, they picked up prodigy Yanis “Alpha54” Champenois and went on a tear in the RLRS. They ended up first in the season with a 6-1 record and qualified for RLCS through the promotion tournament by defeating RLCS teams CompLexity and Fnatic.

More recently, Savage played at DreamHack Leipzig, the most stacked Rocket League tournament to date. Here again, they showed their potential by ending in third/fourth place, defeating proven RLCS teams such as Flipsid3 Tactics, Cloud9, and G2, only falling to titans Dignitas in the semi-finals 4-3 in overtime. With that performance, they cemented themselves as one of the world’s best teams and are possibly the first RLRS team to be considered as a favorite for making the World Championship, if not winning that World Championship.

RLCS begins this weekend

The announcement comes just a few days ahead of RLCS Season 7. This weekend league play begins on Saturday for North America and Sunday for Europe at twitch.tv/rocketleague at 12 p.m. PST and 9 a.m. PST respectively. FCB’s first match-up will be against Dignitas. The final match of league play five weeks later, however, will be one for the storylines, as they take on PSG. Not only has Barça – PSG become a famous game in football ever since that magical comeback in the Champions League, but Bluey will also take on his former teammates after getting benched.
