What is the format for Riyadh Masters 2o22?
Ten teams will attend the tournament, seven of them via drect invitation; the other three teams qualified through the Gamers Without Borders 2022 tournament in May 2022. Gamers Without Borders qualified three teams from Europe, Asia and Saudi Arabia respectively.
The tournament will have two stages, a group stage and a playoff bracket. The group stage will split the teams into two groups of five. Like most Dota tournaments, each team will play each other in a round robin best-of-twos to determine seeding. The first seed in each group will get a playoff bye and go straight into the semi-finals. Each group’s second and third place teams will move to the quarter finals; the remaining teams will leave the tourney. In the event of a two team tie-breaker, a best-of-three will be played between both teams. If more than two teams end up tied, the teams will play each other in best-of-ones to determine which teams move on.
Some familiar faces return
Due to strict Covid-19 restrictions on international travel, there are some players who can’t make it to the tournament. While this might be negative for the teams, fans get to see some old faces returning to the scene as stand-ins; Anathan “ana” Pham, a two-time International champion with OG Esports, will be making his competitive return with Team Liquid.
Team Secret‘s offlaner, Daryl Koh “Iceiceice” Pei Xiang, was also unable to make it to the event; he’s being replaced by Roman “Resolut1on” Fomynok, a Digital Chaos veteran that made it to the The International 2016’s grand finals.
