The sports network is starting to pave its way into esports, as they have broadcasted several tournaments over the past week. Since the pandemic created a barrier between traditional sports and fans, online gaming has been a solution to keep everyone interested.

John Lasker, VP of digital programming at ESPN, shared a few words regarding the partnership. “Showcasing one of the most popular esports in the world with the LCS’ Spring Split playoffs allows ESPN to serve new audiences.”

2020 Spring Playoffs

This year’s Spring Split competition is the biggest tournament of the year so far. It will determine which team will represent North America for the Mid-Season Invitational in the late summer. LCS Commissioner Chris Greeley showed excitement over this opportunity for LoL. “Now more than ever, coming together to watch and enjoy elite competitive gaming has the power to unite us as a community,” he said. “We’re thrilled to bring the very best of the LCS to new audiences and existing fans through this partnership.”

Each game in the Playoffs is comprised of Best-Of-5 matches, with the grand final on April 19. Until then, each game will air on the ESPN app or the ESPN2 channel. In order to inform new viewers, ESPN posted a table including the schedule of the upcoming games.

As the pandemic continues to affect esports and traditional sports, ESPN seeks to bring their network ratings up by broadcasting online games. Besides League of Legends, they have hosted a 12-hour marathon featuring Rocket League, NBA 2K, Madden, and more.
