Captain Faceroll wins Super Smash Bros. Melee Singles at Fête

Griffin “Captain Faceroll” Williams won Super Smash Bros. Melee Singles at Fête in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England on Sunday. This marks his first significant tournament victory since Ultimate Nimbus in March. With 312 entrants, the Fête Melee Singles event is among Captain Faceroll’s biggest tournament wins ever.

Captain Faceroll made it to Winners Quarters with little opposition, earning 3-0 victories over Max “Oldiz” Haugan and Sander “Fout NL” Weber. He faced a greater challenge in top 16, as Tommy “Pricent” Lindås took him to game five. However, Captain Faceroll came out on top in order to advance into top 8 on winners side.

The remainder of the tournament was filled with solid 3-1 victories for Captain Faceroll. Captain Faceroll overcame Daniel “Zamu” Bernstein in Winners Semis of Fête Melee Singles. He then overcame Adam “Setchi” Farmer in both Winners Finals and Grand Finals.

Captain Faceroll’s year has seemed quiet considering he placed 49th at his only supermajor thus far, GENESIS 6. However, he has done phenomenally well at smaller regional tournaments in 2019. Fête Melee was no exception. This season, Captain Faceroll has wins over Jeffrey “Axe” Williamson, Johnny “S2J” Kim, Shephard “Fiction” Lima, and Avery “Ginger” Wilson. His strong wins allowed Captain Faceroll to achieve No. 17 on the Summer 2019 MPGR.

Other results from Fête Melee

As a UK local, Setchi was the clear fan favorite of the Fête Melee event. Setchi impressively made it to Winners Finals, defeating “Nicki”, Álvaro “Trif” García Moral, and Elliot “Frenzy” Grossman in the process. Setchi ultimately placed 2nd, scoring another win over Trif in Losers Finals. Interestingly, Trif appears to have a Captain Falcon problem. He has dropped sets to Falcon mains like Setchi and Nicholas “NMW” Whittier.

American Falco main “bobby big ballz” underperformed at this event. Despite being the 4th seed, bobby big ballz placed 13th at Fête. He suffered upset losses to two European players, Christopher “MINT” Montgomery and Girardin “Jah Ridin’” Yann.

Frenzy, another UK player, placed 4th in Fête Melee Singles. Frenzy won sets against Jah Ridin’, MINT, and Pricent. Aaron “Professor Pro” Thomas, the No. 1 player in the United Kingdom, performed worse than expected at Fête. Professor Pro placed 9th, dropping sets to Zamu and Nicki.
