Call of Duty League looks to form a bubble for 2021 season

This article is over 4 years old and may contain outdated information

Multiple sources have revealed that Activision is looking into a potential bubble for the 2021 CDL season. This bubble would resemble what the NBA is currently executing with their bubble in Disney World. According to sources the bubble would either take place in Las Vegas, Nevada, or Dallas, Texas.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare had to go online after COVID-19 shut the country down back in March. This caused several connection issues between the twelve competing teams. Multiple teams lagged heavily through their series, were hit offline, and some had to move for a better connection. All of these problems forced the 2020 championship to be pre-recorded so that teams wouldn’t risk being hit offline during the tournament.

With Black Ops Cold War soon approaching, there are a lot of questions regarding the future of the league. The problems that the Call of Duty League faced with online play has brought a bubble into consideration. However the question still arises, would the addition of a bubble even work?

Call of Duty bubble vs League of Legends bubble

League of Legends, much like Call of Duty, had to continue their tournaments offline for most regions. This worked for the individual playoffs, but would not be possible if League of Legends held their Worlds event. Worlds is held every year and features the top three teams from each region to compete against each other.

The League of Legends World Championship will be held this year in China without fans but will be held in person. All the teams from each region flew to China to compete within the bubble for Worlds. They would be playing on what some are calling the “Chinese Super Server.” Something similar to this server could be used to house all of the franchised Call of Duty teams.

There is still time before Black Ops Cold War is released which means that Activision can continue to investigate forming a bubble. An event held in either Las Vegas or Dallas would be able to hold all of the teams at a single time. However, this could mean players from other countries would have to move to the US.
