Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer has seen dozens of maps enter different rotations in its lifetime. From the 16 that we got at launch back in November of 2022 to the two dozen plus we have now in the summer of 2023, maps have been one bit of content that the developers have not skimped out on.
While it did look shaky to start, as Seasons 1 and 2 only introduce two new maps each, we have since gotten several fresh maps that have kept multiplayer fans entertained. However, some players might not even know a certain map is in the game. Or, other players might simply be looking to see if their opinions on specific maps are valid.
Either way, I have ranked all of the current maps in Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer (as of Season 4) so players can see how their feelings stack up to mine.
Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer maps ranked
I will be ranking every single map we currently have in multiplayer. This means that only 6v6 maps will be included. I am choosing to not include Gunfight and Ground War maps, as those are modes outside of traditional multiplayer, in my opinion. To see all of the 6v6 maps ranked, check out the list below.
Breenbergh Hotel
This is the best map in multiplayer from a traditional sense. It has the standard three lanes, power positions, flank routes, and looks terrific. For most modes, Hotel plays the best, which is why it was the most-picked map throughout the 2023 Call of Duty League season.
Farm 18
Farm 18 is one of the best close-range maps in MW2. While the power positions on it, like the roofs on either side of the map, can get a little annoying, the map plays great when all players are running around looking for action.
Dome
Our first post-launch map is Dome. This is one of the most beloved maps from the original MW3 in 2011 and its return in 2023 was everything I expected. It plays the same way as it did all those years ago and is perfect for any playstyle.
Shipment
You know why this map is ranked so high. There’s no other map like Shipment, and I could put it at the top of this list if I was basing them around completing camo challenges.
Shoot House
Once again, another remade map that the developers know players will enjoy. Shoot House is great for both close and long-range gunfights, but if players are camping hard, then this map becomes a slog to play.
Mercado Las Almas
Another base launch map in MW2, Mercado is a great, traditional map that could have been designed a little better if it wasn’t ripped straight out of a Ground War map. Despite some of its shortcomings, such as having too many useless areas, Mercado is a map that I would play again and again.
El Asilo
Speaking of a map with too many useless areas, we have El Asilo next. If the map was shortened vertically by a substantial amount, El Asilo could have been top-tier. However, the giant spaces in the back of the map can make Asilo play far too slow at times.
Showdown
Yet another remake cracks the top 10. Showdown was a beloved map from the original Modern Warfare and it was faithfully remade here in MW2.
Valderas Museum
Valderas Museum has had the strangest life of any Call of Duty map ever. It was included in the beta for the game, then taken out without a word for the launch, and finally put back in MW2 with Season 2. Nevertheless, it’s a solid map with, once again, too much useless space.
Crown Raceway
Crown Raceway had the potential to be one of the better maps in MW2 multiplayer. However, the way that some of its lanes are designed seems to encourage camping in the back of the map, which is how most players choose to play the map.
Himmelmatt Expo
This is a solid post-launch map in MW2. Himmelmatt Expo is not a hugely popular map but it’s also one that players wouldn’t choose to not play if given the choice.
Embassy
Embassy could have been fantastic as a map if not for the many snaking spots and the sheer volume of doors throughout its buildings. The doors are just too much for me to handle, especially in competitive modes.
Zarqwa Hydroelectric
While the water routes on Zarqwa were a good idea in theory, they simply wound up being more of an annoyance for me than anything else. If the water was removed from Zarqwa, I think the map would be moved up several spots on this list.
Al Bagra Fortress
And now we have my hot take of these rankings. I believe Al Bagra Fortress was designed incredibly poorly and could have been a much better map. The ability to get spawn trapped on the statue side of the map is so easy for a team to do. Basically, if you spawn on the statue side of the map, you’re almost immediately at a disadvantage and have a high likelihood of losing the match.
As for the rest of the map rankings, I won’t be providing an explanation, as many of you likely know why those maps are ranked the way they are.
- Alboran Hatchery
- Pelayo’s Lighthouse
- Black Gold
- Taraq
- Kunstenaar District
- Santa Sena Border Crossing
So that does it for my rankings of the Modern Warfare 2 maps in 2023. We’ll have to see what new maps get added to multiplayer that could shake this list up but, for now, these are the rankings.
