How to unlock Conversion Kits in Modern Warfare 3

Alter your gun in a completely new way

Conversion Kits are the newest feature that’s being implemented in the Gunsmith for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. The feature was showcased in-depth in a teaser video by the developers at Sledgehammer Games ahead of the MW3 beta. Essentially, as explained by the devs, Conversion Kits are ways to turn a base gun into another weapon entirely.

One of the examples the devs showed off was turning the Renetti automatic pistol into a mini carbine submachine gun with a new stock, body, and iron sights. All of those changes were accomplished by equipping a single Conversion Kit on the weapon in the Gunsmith. Obviously, this new feature will take some time to fully understand, but in the meantime, you can read about how to simply unlock Conversion Kits in Modern Warfare 3.

Unlocking Conversion Kits in Modern Warfare 3

First and foremost, you can unlock the ability to equip Conversion Kits on your weapons by reaching max level with a specific gun. Reaching max level grants you access to Aftermarket Parts, which is the encompassing name for all Conversion Kits in MW3.

Once you’re at max level with a gun, you will see the Conversion Kit slot become unlocked at the bottom of the attachment screen in the Gunsmith. You can click on the slot to see all of the available Conversion Kits that are available for your weapon.

In order to unlock each individual Conversion Kit, all of which will turn your weapon into something different, you need to complete an in-game challenge. Here are some of the examples of the Conversion Kit challenges the developers gave:

  • Get 25 Kills while hip firing or using Tac-Stance
  • Get 30 Kills with five attachments equipped

As you can see, the specific in-game challenges aren’t too difficult to complete, but they do add an extra layer to the grind of completely ranking up a weapon.

You will also be able to unlock certain Conversion Kits by completing Weekly Challenges in MW3. Weekly Challenges refresh every week and you need to complete a series of tasks to fulfill an entire list of Weekly Challenges. If you complete all of the necessary challenges, you unlock the specific Conversion Kit.

If you miss one Conversion Kit in a Weekly Challenge, don’t worry, as it will then be available to unlock via an Armoy Challenge. This is the same way you unlock all of the other Conversion Kits. There will supposedly be more Conversion Kits added through the Weekly Challenge system as MW3 goes on, so pay attention to the challenge screen to see if there’s a new kit to unlock.

We’ll have to wait and see exactly how the Conversion Kits play out in Modern Warfare 3, but so far, the feature looks to be innovative and a nice addition to the Gunsmith.
