This year’s League of Legends World Championship will feature new songs produced by Riot Games and Universal Music Publishing Group. The news announced last night that UMPG China recently worked with Riot Games China to host an esports-themed songwriting camp. The collaboration included the works of 14 UMPG songwriters with plans to produce six new songs for the 2020 Worlds Finals. Overall, fans are excited about the news, especially after the successful release of Riot’s K/DA Korean pop group in 2018.

The songwriting camp took place between July 24 and 27 in Shanghai’s GUM Studio. Participating songwriters in the camp included accomplished artists such as Golden Melody Awards (GMAs) Best Band winner Matzka and GMAs Best New Artist nominee Gong. All of the artists involved had worked together in-studio and virtually, creating new tunes relating to esports, music festival themes, and more. Although UMPG has released the list of songwriters, it’s still a mystery over which 6 artists will perform these new songs.

Excitement and speculation for this year’s Worlds

Joe Fang, managing director of UMPG China shared a few words over the new partnership. “I am honored to be partnering with Riot Games on this initiative to create songs to win the hearts and minds of the Chinese esports community and celebrate this world-renowned event.” The annual Worlds event is scheduled to take place in Shanghai from September 25 through October 31. After months of uncertainty due to COVID-19, Riot had recently revealed that the games will continue as planned with some slight changes.

“When music meets and mixes with gaming, it is simply exciting,” said Leo Lin, head of Riot Games China. “I look forward to empowering and celebrating the 10th World Championship of the League of Legends with music of power and varied style through working with UMPG.”

Fans are more than curious as to who will perform the upcoming Worlds songs. Some fans have speculated that there may be a mix of popular Asian artists as well as UMG’s top American artists. For the 2014 Worlds event, Riot Games featured UMG band Imagine Dragons, so there have been ties to the publishing company for some time already. Additionally, Riot Games’ parent company Tencent owns a 10% stake of UMPG, so there’s no surprise that both Riot and UMPG are working together.
