Since its release in late 2017, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds has more or less reinvented an entire genre of games. PUBG has since gone on to perfect the genre, creating an empire of chicken dinners and changing the face of esports. Now, PUBG Corporation is looking to make a radical change in the direction of PUBG.
First announced at last week’s The Game Awards, The Callisto Protocol is a new survival horror game from the creators of Dead Space. In a disgustingly gooey cinematic reveal, The Callisto Protocol is a very different experience than what most PUBG players might expect. Developed by Striking Distance The Callisto Protocol will be a narrative entry in the PUBG universe. Dead Space co-creator Glen Schofield is leading the studio, and wants to create the scariest game of the next-generation.
In The Callisto Protocol, no one can hear you eat your chicken dinner
Set 300 years in the future from the main PUBG timeline, The Callisto Protocol trailer doesn’t show much. A character, who probably isn’t the main character, wakes up in some sort of space prison that is under lockdown. The game doesn’t even appear to take place on Earth, instead taking place on a rocky mining outpost in space. A large gas giant planet, possibly Jupiter, hangs over the facility. Even the word Callisto hints that the game takes place near Jupiter. Callisto is the second largest moon in Jupiter’s orbit, and the Greek myth that the moon is named after is all about transformation.
“The funny thing is, I came in with this story when I went and met with the PUBG people for the first time and started talking about [The Callisto Protocol] and building a studio,” said Schofield in an interview with IGN. “I presented this game to them, and so what we did was we made it fit within the PUBG storyline.”
Whatever Schofield has in store for PUBG is terrifying and lonely. More importantly, The Callisto Protocol is a wildly unique approach to the PUBG universe and may hint at a new direction for PUBG.
