Dataminers are once again at the center of a big rumor, as they have been digging deep into Super Smash Bros. Ultimate to find out every detail available. Twitter user @jam1garner tweeted this discovery out last night with the accompanying picture:
What this shows us is three parameters with possible codenames for future DLC characters. Namely:
- fighter_kind_jack
- fighter_kind_brave
- fighter_kind_packu
“Packu” most likely stands for the Japanese name for Piranha Plant, which is “Pakkun Flower.” Jack could most likely be a reference to Jack Frost, aka the mascot for Atlus, the developer of Persona 5, the home of already confirmed DLC character Joker.
Â
Last but not least, and the real story here is “Brave.” Brave could be a reference to the main Hero of the Dragon Quest series. In Japan, this character is typically referred to as “Yuusha,” but if the name is shortened to a single Kanji, the meaning is changed to “Brave.”
While all rumors should, of course, be taken with a grain of salt, I find this one highly believable.
Dragon Quest is among the biggest franchises in Japan and is successful in the West as well. Outside of King K. Rool, all Smash characters represent a very Japanese side of video games. Dragon Quest 11 recently released to high critical and commercial success, with a very high rating of 86 on Metacritic and hitting four million copies sold worldwide as of November. Plus Square Enix, Dragon Quest‘s publisher, already has a good relationship with Nintendo, and Smash specifically, already having Cloud from Final Fantasy VII as a representative of the company. Not to mention, Dragon Quest is long overdue to be represented in a fighting game, having DLC scrapped for J-Stars Victory Vs., and still being highly requested to appear in some capacity in Jump Force.
I would not be surprised in the slightest if this rumor came to be true. Plus, Dragon Quest is awesome, and the more awesome characters in Smash the better as far as I am concerned. You can find our review of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate here.
