The Mid-Season Invitational Group Stage concluded on May 14, with Invictus Gaming, SK Telecom T1, G2 Esports, and Team Liquid advancing to THE semifinals. IG have proven themselves already as clear favorites going into their matchup versus TL. The series between G2 and the resurging SKT has the potential to go either way, however.
We’ve spent the entire week breaking down each Group Stage game to the molecular level in our top secret laboratory run by some of the world’s leading armchair analysts. The result? Two of the most accurate predictions we’ve ever produced. Don’t @ me.
Why: This is probably the part where you were hoping we’d predict that TL take a game off of IG or even beat them in the upset of the century. If so, then think again.
TL had a rough run throughout most of the Group Stage, but in their last game against G2 that qualified them for knockouts, they looked like a much better team. Unfortunately for them, improvement isn’t enough to defeat IG.
The fact of the matter is that not only do IG have the best players in the world filling out most of their roles, but they’ve looked untouchable throughout groups and only lost to SKT at the very end. This has the potential to be one of the most one-sided best-of-fives in the history of MSI.
Why: G2’s path in the MSI Knockout Stage is looking oddly similar to their 2018 World Championship run. Lose to Phong Vũ Buffalo in groups (✔), enter the bracket stage against one of the favorites to win the entire tournament (✔), take them to five games and upset them (???).
G2 and SKT have had opposite trajectories throughout this tournament. G2 started off incredibly strong and even defeated SKT in both round-robins. SKT took longer to ramp up, but once they showed that they were in form, they made people regret ever doubting them in the first place and convincingly dismantled IG.
We expect the match to reach five games either way, but we’ll give the slight edge to G2 here due to their their unpredictable drafts and flexible in-game decision making. At least one base race is inevitable in this matchup.
The MSI Knockout Stage begins on May 17 at 3:00 a.m. PDT with Team Liquid vs. Invictus Gaming. G2 and SKT will face off on May 18 at 12:00 a.m. PDT.
