Esports journalist Anokh “Edwin_Budding” Palakurthi has published a book-length history of competitive Super Smash Bros. Melee. The text, titled “The Book of Melee,” traces the story of competitive Smash from its beginnings in the early aughts to the present day.

Melee is one of the oldest esports with an active competitive scene, and tracing the game’s extensive history took Palakurthi over two years. Throughout the writing process, Palakurthi also contributed regularly to his blog, posting articles about subjects such as different Smash characters’ impact on the metagame and producing rankings of the game’s greatest sets and players.

In an interview with GameTyrant last week, Palakurthi acknowledged that Melee may eventually subside as a competitive title, though he remained confident that the recent burst of popularity experienced by Smash Ultimate will eventually benefit Melee as players move from the Nintendo Switch title to the older game.

“I want this book to be a relic of our resilience,” he said. “I want it to be a relic of something that Smashers can look back at when they’re in their forties.”

So far, “The Book of Melee” has received a warm reception from many prominent members of the Smash community. Jason “Mew2King” Zimmerman commented on Palakurthi’s “Top 100 Melee Sets of All Time” project, which the writer put together as part of the lead-in to the book’s publication.
