A classic location in Fortnite: Battle Royale was destroyed on Saturday during the explosive finale to Fortnite’s eighth season.

Akin to the “Cornucopia” in the arena of The Hunger Games, the Towers have long been a common drop point and go-to spot for top-notch loot and equipment. But Fortnite enthusiasts may soon have to find a new location for their firefights: on Saturday night, a volcano erupted, destroying Tilted Towers and several other parts of the island.

In recent months, Epic Games has drawn criticism for its willingness to apply balance-altering updates only days before high-profile competitive events. This drastic change to the island, which comes midway through the Fortnite World Cup Qualifiers, shows that the company is still willing to keep competitive players on their toes despite the potential flak.

We don’t yet know many details about Fortnite’s upcoming ninth season, though a teaser posted by Epic Games earlier today seems to indicate that the season will have a futuristic theme.

At the moment, the only confirmed information about season nine is that it will begin on May 9. Whether or not Tilted Towers will return has yet to be determined.
